Samsung Showcases Its Most Eco-Friendly and World's Slimmest 1080P Plasma HDTVs
March 31, 2009

Combine Energy Efficiency, Sophisticated Designs, and Unrivaled Picture Quality

With Advanced Multimedia Capabilities

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J. - March 31, 2009 - Samsung Electronics America, Inc., a market leader and award-winning innovator in consumer electronics, today revealed its continued support of plasma technology with its 2009 Series 8 and 6 Plasma HDTV line-up. The new Samsung Plasma HDTVs include increased energy efficiency, deeper black levels and eye-pleasing, décor-friendly designs, to establish a new standard of excellence.

“Samsung is committed to incorporating the latest advancements in plasma technology to produce our best-in-class HDTVs,” said Steve Panosian, director of Visual Display Marketing at Samsung Electronics America, Inc. “Consumers can expect excellent picture quality, beautiful design, energy efficiency and expanded networking capabilities from our new Plasma line, which balances quality and compelling features with great value.”

Luxurious Design

The Samsung Series 8 Plasma HDTV is the world’s slimmest 1080p resolution plasma HDTV to feature a built-in ATSC tuner, measuring just over an inch thick. Sporting chrome-like, translucent accents, the Series 8 features an encased bezel enhancing the ultra-slim depth of the set. The bezel itself adds an entirely new level of sophistication to the Series 8, with the outer edges giving off a prism effect, magnifying light so that color intensity changes depending on the viewing angle.

With Samsung’s traditional rose black Touch of Color™ (ToC™) bezel, the Series 6 Plasma lends a subtle, yet head-turning hint of color to the TV’s frame. Each of the plasma’s curved edges are transparent, creating the illusion of a display floating in mid-air. Further enhancing the design, the sets are also supported by a crystal neck and clear, reinforced glass stand for a “barely there” appearance.

Unrivaled Picture Quality

Despite their ultra-slim design, the Samsung Series 8 and 6 Plasma HDTVs deliver stunning picture performance, providing consumers with the ultimate HD viewing experience. Equipped with the latest HDTV picture quality features, including Samsung’s Ultra FilterBright™ (Series 6) and Ultra FilterBright Plus™ (Series 8) anti-glare technology, the new plasmas achieve some of the highest dynamic contrast ratios ever, for deep, dark blacks, crisp whites and richer colors. By leveraging an array of black-coated color enhancement film to minimize glare and maximize contrast from a room’s ambient lighting, the Ultra FilterBright™ and Ultra FilterBright Plus™ technology reduces the luminance in black levels by up to 50 percent over previous Samsung models.

Both the Series 8 and 6 are also equipped with Samsung’s CinemaSmooth™ technology for playback of 24fps Blu-ray content, as well as 24fps movies via HD satellite service providers that mirrors the quality of the latest movie theaters. Samsung’s Wide Color Enhancer 3 maps HD signals to the panel’s native color space, ensuring that a full range of vibrant yet natural colors (110 percent of the current HD specification) are always shown onscreen.

Expanded Multimedia and Networking Skills

With Samsung’s new Medi@2.0 (TM) suite, the Series 8 and 6 Plasma HDTVs bring an expansive array of entertainment options right into consumers’ living rooms. The Internet@TV - Content Service, developed with Yahoo!, offers onscreen access to web-based content from Yahoo! (Flickr, News, Weather, and Finance), and others including USA Today. Easily activated with the push of a button, the widgets-based interface and scrollbar run along the bottom of the screen for effortless browsing of the latest programs and content. Consumers will also be able to enjoy a growing library of widgets, as the widget development kit will be open to content providers willing to create new offerings. The Medi@2.0 (TM) suite also includes wired and wireless DLNA compatibility, making it easy to enjoy photos, music and videos from a networked PC directly on the television. Additionally, the televisions come pre-loaded with a collection of photos, artwork, games, recipes and more, while two USB 2.0 connections can access and play multimedia files from a variety of portable devices and drives.

Greener Than Ever

With eco-friendliness in mind, both the Series 8 and 6 Plasma HDTVs feature high-efficiency panel to conserve energy, and are able to meet Energy Star® guidelines.
