Tip 31: Using white balance
June 4, 2009

samsung_tip31If you just took a photo and notice that it looks somewhat orange or blue, then you’ll want to adjust your camera’s white balance settings.

Different types of light, whether it’s incandescent (tungsten) or fluorescent light bulbs, sunlight, or even sunlight on a cloudy day, all have varying color properties. For example, incandescent bulbs have a warmer orange or yellow tone, whereas fluorescent bulbs have a more cool blue tone.

Most digital cameras offer a range of preset white balance settings, including AUTO. Unfortunately, leaving your digital camera on its AUTO white balance setting may not always produce the most accurate results. Typically, AUTO white balance performs exceptionally well in outdoor environments; however, indoor artificial lighting can play tricks on your digital camera.

Take a look through your digital camera’s user manual and see if it offers the ability to change its white balance. If you’re using a Samsung SL420, you can access your camera’s white balance settings while shooting in the “P” (Program) mode.

While in Program mode, press the “Fn” button, located on the bottom right underneath the five-way mode dial, which will bring up the various options which you can adjust. Scroll down to the second option from the top, which is WHITE BALANCE.

Here you can select from AUTO, DAYLIGHT, CLOUDY, FLOURESCENT (daylight), FLOURESCENT (white), TUNGSTEN, as well as MANUAL. The MANUAL white balance setting will allow you to define and customize the white balance for your current shooting environment by simply aiming the camera at a white subject and pressing the shutter button half-way.

You’ll notice that Samsung also gives you the ability to see the affect that each white balance preset will have on your image, so keep an eye on the camera’s LCD screen and be sure to select that which you feel best represents the actual color of the scene.
