Tip 18: Perfect profile photos
May 28, 2009

Taking the perfect profile picture for your personal social networking site is easier than ever before.

Your profile pictures are one of the first things that visitors to your page gravitate towards. Without words, your profile picture can easily give others a feel for your personality, so it’s important that you upload the best photo possible.

To take some truly exceptional profile photos you’ll want to use a tripod and your digital camera’s timer. Find an interesting backdrop or scenery like a city skyline, frame the shot the way you like it, activate your digital camera’s timer and jump back into the shot. This is easy to do and requires just the push of a button.

If you’re using a Samsung digital camera, you can access the timer by finding the small icon that resembles a stop-watch, which is located on the back of the camera on the right-side of the five-way mode dial. Pressing this icon will bring up a variety of timer options for you to select, including a two second and 10 second timer, and other advanced timer options such as Double and Motion Timer. The Double timer option will tell the camera to take a photo 10 seconds after you press the shutter button, then another photo two seconds after that. This will give you the ability to quickly change your pose without having to go back to the camera and activate the timer again.

Samsung’s Motion Timer is unique as it will detect motion for up to six seconds after the shutter button is pressed, only taking a photo once it detects that movement has stopped. This is extremely useful as it gives you adequate time to get back into the shot and strike the pose that you want!

Samsung also offers a cool “Self-Portrait” mode on several of its new digital cameras. Self-Portrait is a great feature, especially if you find that you’re constantly turning your camera on yourself for a quick snapshot. Self-Portrait can easily be turned on by dialing up your camera’s face detection settings. When selected, Self-Portrait will automatically detect your face, adjust focus and exposure, and will give you an audible beep letting you know that you’re centered in the frame – no more photos with your head chopped off!
