This is a great time to apply some of the portrait tips that we’ve shared before, but also a time to think outside the box! Graduation encompasses more than just the graduate accepting his or her diploma, so your pictures should reflect the ENTIRE event.
In addition to the standard staged photographs of the graduate, friends and family, keep an eye out for other moments to capture from that special day. For example, use your camera’s macro shooting mode to capture close-ups of the graduate’s tassel and the page of the program with your graduate’s name on it.
If you have a wide-angle lens, you can also try taking photos of the crowd to document the impressive gathering of people on the special day.
It’s also an opportune time sneak in some candid shots to capture the true, genuine emotion of the day. Candid shots are ideal for pre-graduation moments, including photos of the graduate dressing in cap and gown, or for capturing friends’ and family’s reactions during the ceremony.
The day will be before you know it, but with fabulous pictures it can be relived over and over again!
