Tip 16: Avoiding red-eye
May 26, 2009

samsung_tip16We've all been frustrated by it - the dreaded "red-eye" that creeps into our photos.

Here's a quick overview on what causes red-eye in your images. Red-eye occurs when light from your camera's flash bounces off your subject's retinas and reflects back into the camera's lens.

So what can you do to stop red-eye?

Try asking your subjects to look slightly off to one side or up or down. This can help reduce red-eye as the light reflection will be minimized.  In addition, digital camera manufacturers, like Samsung, outfit their digital cameras with advanced flash modes designed to automatically reduce and prevent the red-eye effect. These flash modes are easy to use and can be accessed with just the push of a button.

Take a look at the back of your digital camera and try to locate the icon that looks like a lightning bolt. On Samsung digital cameras, except those featuring the Smart Touch user interface like the TL34HD, this icon is located on the left-side of the five-way mode dial. Pressing this icon will bring up the various flash options that your Samsung digital camera offers. The flash options offered by Samsung typically include AUTO, RED-EYE, RED-EYE FIX, and of course the ability to turn your camera's flash off completely.

The RED-EYE flash mode will tell your digital camera to fire a pre-flash right before the main flash goes off. This pre-flash can help reduce the red-eye effect by causing your subject's eyes to constrict, specifically the retinas, so that less light is reflected back to the camera when taking a photo. The RED-EYE FIX flash mode actually goes a step further to automatically correct and remove red-eye from your subjects while taking the photo.

RED-EYE FIX can also be applied to images that you've already taken with your Samsung digital camera. To remove the red-eye effect from a saved image, simply select the camera's editing menu while reviewing the image you wish to correct and select RED-EYE FIX.  You can kiss red-eye goodbye!
