Did you know that May is National Photography Month? That’s right, and over the next four weeks, Samsung is going to bring you 31 photo tips – one for each day in May – that you can use to improve your photography skills. These tips will cover everything from how to use certain modes and settings on your camera, to suggestions on how to frame your subjects better or use the best lighting to get great photos every time. So get outside, take advantage of the delightful spring weather, and give these tips a try. We’ll bring you a tip each day, but you can always check out the Samsung Digital Imaging Facebook page in the meantime for more information.

Tip 1: What does the little flower mean?

April showers bring May flowers, and there’s no better time than May to experiment with macro photography.

If you’ve ever taken a look at the back of your digital camera, you’ve probably noticed the little flower icon. This is the macro setting for your digital camera. When you press or select the macro setting, your digital camera will automatically adjust its focus to allow you to take beautiful close-up images. This is ideal for photographing flowers or other unique subjects.

Your camera may also offer a Close Up or Macro scene mode which will better optimize the camera’s settings. All cameras are different, so be sure to check your manual regarding how close you can actually get to your subject.

If you have a Samsung digital camera, selecting the right scene mode for great close up shots is easy. For example, if you’re using the SL102, press the “MENU” button, select “MODE,” scroll down and select “SCENE,” and then select “CLOSE UP.” You can also set the SL102’s focusing to Macro when in AUTO mode by simply pressing the little flower icon which is located on the bottom of the on five-way mode dial.

When shooting in macro mode, it’s important to keep your camera steady, and bright lighting also improves your chances of taking great macro images.

This is an easy way to experiment with digital photography and enhance your creativity.
