National Photography Month: Tips 8 and 9
May 14, 2009

tip8 Tip 8: Better Family Photos
If you’re taking a group photo of family or friends, be sure to turn on face detection.

A popular feature found on many compact digital cameras, face detection is a built-in feature that allows the camera to recognize faces in a scene. When the camera recognizes a face, it’s outlined by a box and the camera automatically adjusts its settings to ensure that all your subjects’ faces are properly exposed and in focus. This is a surefire way to get the best shot possible every time.

Selecting the face detection feature on your camera is easy. For example, if you’re using the Samsung SL420 in AUTO mode, simply press the MENU button, select “FUNCTIONS,” and then select “FACE DETECTION.”

All cameras are different, so do consult your manual regarding the number of faces your camera can detect as well as other interesting face detection technologies such as blink detection.

Tip 9: Shoot video too!
It’s almost a guarantee that you’ll find yourself in a situation where you wish you had a video camera.

The best part about the evolution of digital cameras is the fact that they now serve as multipurpose devices. Most of today’s entry-level digital cameras offer a movie mode. In fact, some higher-end models also incorporate high-definition video! By simply rotating a dial or selecting video or movie mode from your camera’s menu system, you’re able to instantaneously go from photographer to videographer. This can prove to be useful while on vacation, or documenting one of life’s many milestones, such as a child’s first birthday.
