National Photography Month: Photo Tips 4 and 5
May 12, 2009
Tip 4: Locking the focus
This is perhaps one of the most useful photography tips that you can apply when shooting with your digital camera.
When taking a photo, press your camera’s shutter button down only halfway. This will tell the camera to lock its focus and adjust its exposure for what’s currently in the center of the frame. While continuing to hold the shutter button halfway down, you’re able to move your subject off-center while keeping it properly focused and exposed.
This is a great method to help you when composing your photos using the rule of thirds!
Tip 5: Be candid and spontaneous
Some of the most moving and memorable photos you can take are when your subjects are not looking at the camera.
The next time you’re at a party or family gathering, be sure to take the standard shots where friends and family pose and smile for a photo, but also make an attempt to be covert with your digital camera and snap a few photos of others without them knowing.
Being candid is a wonderful way to add depth to an image and better capture and convey emotion. Catch your subjects off guard while they’re talking to others, laughing at a joke, or just daydreaming. Children playing or engaged in activities is another great example of an opportunity to snap a candid photo.
