TouchWiz™ Connected Mobile Applications
March 31, 2009

Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile)* today announced that it is working with Yahoo®, Google™ and AccuWeather.com to introduce a new set of rich connected mobile applications that will run on Samsung’s lineup of TouchWiz™ touchscreen phones.

The rich connected mobile applications are designed to customize and personalize the user experience. These new connected mobile applications will be pre-loaded on select Samsung Mobile touchscreen devices.

“Samsung Mobile is bringing the leaders in news, web search, finance and weather to our customers with the addition of these new connected mobile applications,” said Omar Khan, senior vice president of strategy and product management for Samsung Mobile. “Consumers want to stay connected and informed when they are on-the-go and the new release of Samsung’s TouchWiz technology keeps this vital content within just one touch of our powerful phones.”

UI Evolution is developing a set of developer tools for Samsung to support the easy development of our rich connected mobile applications. Based upon the Eclipse IDE, developers will have a custom interface allowing them to easily access code samples, FAQ's, device emulation, and submission of content for sale through the Samsung Rich Connected Application storefront.

Other widgets currently available on Samsung Mobile’s TouchWiz touchscreen phones include:
  • Music player
  • Messaging
  • Games
  • Calendar
  • Clock
  • Alarm Clock

Each phone that supports TouchWiz may also include carrier-specific widgets for easy access to the carrier’s custom services.

Samsung Mobile expects to launch several new touchscreen devices with TouchWiz technology and will also continue to collaborate with developers to significantly expand its catalog of connected mobile applications in 2009.

UPDATE: At this time, Samsung is still finalizing the details of its Mobile Connected Apps program and which phones will support those features. Please check back for updates!

i am a eternity owner.. I would like to know if the eternity will EVER get a software update or the touchwiz 2.0 update? I mean you keep saying check back, check back, can you at least if its going to happen or not? I've see that touchwiz 2.0 is available on the samsung omnia, jet. so why not make it available to the eternity?

I'm getting the Samsung Impression in September, but there's also the possibility that I could get the Xenon instead. If the Impression will be able to upgrade to the 2.0 user interface then I'll get the Impression, but if not, that's kind of a deal breaker. So will the Impression be getting the TouchWiz 2.o interface?

I am a Eternity user. The features it already has got me to purchase one and transfer to AT&T. Besides the above mention fixes and features, I like to see if it can get wifi access by either the new Touchwiz 2.0 software (Which is awesome btw) or normal system feature.

Although the admin will probably just reply to my comment with the message "Samsung is finalizing its Mobile Connected Apps programs and the phones that will support it. We currently don’t have any updates at this time, but please check back." I thought I might as well ask if the memoir was going to receive the updated os as well. I see plenty of inquiries about the eternity but not any about the memoir. Samsung, please don't leave us photo-snappers in the dust.

I too purchased the Samsung Eternity. I love this phone, and plan on upgrading to the newest Samsung Eternity 2,3 etc, when my contract is up. This phone won me over, I am an LG fanboy usually. I now plan on sticking with Samsung. But seriously, about 90% of the comments are from ETERNITY users. If anyone, shouldn't us and Impression users get it before anyone else? There is a forum devoted to this phone, and alot of them are giving up hope and half of them switched to a different brand of phone because they doubted they would get it. Prove them wrong, make them switch back to Samsung. :) \r\n\r\nEternity COULD be the dumb iPhone. All you need to do is unlock the cage. Yes that was corny.

Thanks for responding. The ringtone issues are known. The ringtone always starts with vibrate and then melody even though you pick other settings. The ringtone melody volume always starts softer and the setting is not on increasing melody. The vibration is not strong compared to the Impression. This causes missed calls. The date and time in widget doesnt always update. Customer Care said to shutdown phone and turn back on to update phone. Have to say the touch and calibration is really good and screen is good even in birght sun.

I got the Impression because of the sleek Touchwiz UI among other things, and it would be a shame if this update was not available for this device. Interesting that this was released around the time that this announcement was made. Notice that Touchwiz 2.0 was announced for a line of WinMo phones. Please make this update available for the Impression.

iai am an eternity user. the salesrep at att showed me the software update in setting and said one was coming soon. i hope this is so as there are a few bugs. as with may other eternity users, it made a difference purchasing instead of iphone. Apple continues to improve phone but i am waiting to see if Samsung loyally takes care of their customers...not just sell new models. hope to get the update for the eternity... btw... att customers you dont have to wait for the term of ocntract to end to get a new or upgrade your phone. you can get another phone... just not at a discounted price. when can eternity users except a new response back on the upgrade instead of the standard "check back" or 'not yet finalized"

Please email me with feedback, Brandon

I bought the Eternity because the advertisements listed features that weren't even on the phone and the ATT rep explained that they were coming through an update. That was months ago. "Check back soon" isn't an answer for most of us when we've seen this message since before this blog was posted. What it appears consumer-side is that Samsung got the sale on a huge number of units and knows most of us won't be buying new phones for awhile. With that thinking, a huge number of Samsung users will be missing in 21 months when it's time for upgrade and we are all with Apple or LG. Heck, Motorola might take over again by then.\r\n\r\nMy gripes? No voice dial. My motorola from 5 years ago had speaker independent voice dial. No real Touchwiz customization. The task button on the side of the eternity doesn't show apps I have minimized so I have to go through all the menus (because I can't make shortcuts) to reopen the app. 300k ringtone limit, see my note on 5 year old motorolas for that. I like my eternity for what it does do, and what it was supposed to be capable of doing. But I don't like it for what it was advertised as doing and not fulfilling that.

I am yet another Eternity owner, and I have been a Samsung user for many years now. I'm always impressed by the new devices Samsung offers, but I have never been impressed with the follow-through. Whether or not software updates on existing phones are offered is as much a deciding factor for me as any hardware feature. I hope to see Samsung follow through with the Samsung Eternity by offering this TouchWiz UI update for it, and prove they've created a great product, from cradle to grave. I have little use for an abandoned phone.\r\n\r\nJonathan

It sure reads that the updates will only be for new phones. Well i am an owner of the new samsung impression. And let me tell you this is a great phone. Samsung has definitely hit the bulls-eye on this one. But there is always room for improvement. Would like to see more features added like flash for the browser. Apple keeps up with their iphones. Sure would be nice if samsung would step up and take care of their present phones owners and just not on future phones. I understand that you have to make money. But buying a new phone every few months just isnt feesable to some. Remember samsung that phones dont last forever and if you take care of us we will continue to buy samsung devices.

Dear Samsung,\r\n\r\nI received my Eternity yesterday, but with the bugs I found(no speed dial, no way to search through Contacts by typing in the name), I already put the SIM card back in my old phone and called the vendor for an RMA. \r\n\r\nBefore I dropped it in the mail, I decided to dig just a little deeper online past the generic reviews. In doing so, I just found this notice of a possible update that would address these and other bugs/shortcomings of this beautiful phone. \r\n\r\nIncidentally, and perhaps more of interest to you than to me, I found this through a Eternity Users forum that has in excess of 10,000 members, and they are all awaiting to hear how Samsung will treat it's existing customers. Will there be an effort to develop a loyal customer base, especially since most of that base is bound through contracts to keep their phones for 2 years, or not?\r\n\r\nI'm hoping Samsung will see the opportunity to set itself apart as a company that takes care of its customers and grows exponentially through repeat and referral business. So we are hoping to get this-and any future-updates that would improve the performance of our Samsung cellphones.\r\n\r\nThank you,\r\n\r\nJohn

I too have an Eternity and have been hoping for an update for some time now. I look forward to the addition of new features, especially information services like weather and news, but I also hope Samsung will address some of the roll-out bugs the Eternity is plagued with, like the increasing ringtone, the headphone jack not hearing the call audio (and the mic is turned off), SPEED DIAL, customizing the screensaver images with our own, search in the media library and the browser problem ("forbidden") which requires setting airplane mode to get back online.\r\n\r\nThe Eternity needs the attention of an update to fix the inevitable new-model bugs that mar the performance and the usability of this otherwise great phone.

Many users of the TouchWiz phones had purchased this because of the features and competitiveness to other phones. I think it would be un-justice to leave these consumers, including myself in the dark, given they gave the TouchWiz its boost in sales to further the R&D for future phones. Many of the Touchwiz consumers are locked in to contracts and would cost us extra to upgrade. I am not sure if Samsung is wise to the economical situation plaguing many consumers, but would be a nice gesture to accommodate an update for all TouchWiz consumers(Eternity for me). We all could of gone Iphone, but we are different and sought out a better solution per say....Samsung! In all honesty, if we are not thanked for purchasing a Samsung product with a nice TouchWiz update, i am sure we would be willing to look at other options for future purchases once the contracts are up...like an Iphone. Keep your customers happy and they always come back....right?

Thank you for your interest in Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. At this time, Samsung is still finalizing the details of its Mobile Connect Apps program and which phones will support those features. Be sure to check back for updates.

I hope that Eternity (as well as other current TouchWiz phone) owners will share in the improvements you are striving for. These TouchWiz phones have been really nice and I see the potential in them.\r\n\r\nI hope that eventually you can have a common OS between most of your Samsung phones and release periodic updates for all of them to keep owners updated with the best Samsung has to offer to compete with other manufacturers.

Please can you make this available to the Tocco and all other TouchWiz phones.\r\nAs Steve said, many of us are on contracts and we would love to have an upgrade of our software.\r\nIf you allow it then when it comes to choosing a new phone, Samsung will always be first in mind (like always)\r\n\r\n=]

I love my Eternity. However, as with all electronic, improvements are made quickly. I hope that Samsung will give us current owners the oppurtunity to upgrade our software in the very near future. It would not be so important, except for the fact that 2-year contracts prevent most of us from upgrading our hardware. So please make this and any other software update available ASAP!

It seems like, in the midst of Samsung promoting all their new phones and updated other Omnia’s, the Verizon i910 has gotten the cold shoulder. I bought the i910 because I did not want to become an iClone. However, I did admire the attention, ease, simplicity and organization of Apple’s approach to reaching out to their base. They have ONE phone with a lot of amenities and support conveniences. Not a gazillion phones and no uniformity.\r\n\r\nI write all this to say that it would be nice for all Samsung customers to have access to the widgets, updates and ROM’s – at the same time - regardless of the carrier. This announcement is nice and is a step in the right direction. However, I think that Samsung is a little behind the curve here. Many people have made investments in Samsungs high-end phones. I hope Samsung returns the favor.
