Samsung Mondi
March 31, 2009

Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile) today announced the upcoming availability of the Samsung Mondi™, the most advanced mobile WiMAX enabled handheld device in the U.S. The touch screen Mondi, which takes its name from the Latin word for “world," is designed for use with the Clear™ mobile WiMAX service from Clearwire.

The Mondi carries many of the powerful features and uses of a laptop computer or netbook, but its compact slider form factor easily fits into the hand or pocket. GPS Navigation provided by Route 66 adds to the Mondi’s versatility. Available in a solid black finish, this device extends horizontally to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard and optical mouse. The Mondi™ is packed with multimedia features that offer instant access to E-mail, Internet, video content and business applications.

Mondi packs a full -featured web browser, powered by Opera 9.5, which takes full advantage of the device’s 4.3-inch touch screen. To keep connected while on-the-go, Mondi offers best-in-class location based services and instant access to social networking websites. It also supports various services including Fring™, Gypsii™, and MS Live Messenger.

The Mondi is completely customizable, thanks to a set of widgets that can be dragged and dropped anywhere on the display screen for easy viewing and use. Mondi is also an excellent device for work or for play. WiFi connectivity offers the business user fast and simple connections to Outlook Email / Calendars, Microsoft Office and many other vertical business applications outside the Clear service area. I was checkng out the Clear service in my area and stumbled onto this device.... never heard of it before now. This device will be great when the Clear network is larger. I also think it is an insult to have to make a 2 yrs commitment and only get 100 bucks off it. I would have jumped on board and tried it out if the price were lower, but for $349 and a 2 yr commitment the all the risk is on me. Kinda make me think they want all their money up front cause they are unsure if this concept will catch on. But if they lower the price and gain a large following it could replace laptops and cell phones, or atleast folks could travel with only one device.

The Mondi is a Windows Mobile 6.1 device and you can download and install different applications and programs on it. We don't recommend installing untested software, as well as software from unknown sources, as it could impact the integrity of the device.

When I buy a laptop, I assume I will own it for as long as I can. I will make plenty of software updates that will improve/tailor my user experience even without hardware updates. When I buy a cell phone, I expect to own it about a year. I assume that I am stuck with the factory-installed OS, and that though there are small updates I can download, eventually I'll be forced to buy an entirely new device just because there is better software out there. Where does the Mondi fall on this spectrum? It costs as much as a basic desktop PC... can I look forward to owning it as long? Will I be able to upgrade/change the OS, install and uninstall software at my discretion? Or is the device synonymous with the software installed on it?

The Mondi does not accept Windows Mobile Pocket PC programs. Yes, the auto pop-up virtual keyboard can be disabled. Just check your user manual.

The Route 66 software does operate off of GPS, so yes, if you’re outside a WiMAX service area, the GPS on your Samsung Mondi should still work

      1. Can you install Windows Mobile Pocket PC programs on the Mondi (eg Phatnotes, Calligrapher, Pocket Informant, TextMaker, Pocket Explorer, etc)?\r\n\r\n2. I have read that an on-screen keyboard automatically pops up whenever a text field is presented on the screen, even if the slide-out keyboard is being used. Can this auto-pop-up be disabled?\r\n\r\nThanks!

Does the Route 66 Software work off a GPS Chip or does it use wifi/wimax triangulation. If I am in an area with no WiMax coverage does the GPS still work.

Be careful about the coverage Clear claims. They say the have Atlanta covered, but it's really only higher density downtown areas. I live in Buckhead and there is no reception. I'm also surprised by a few of the reviews that read more like PR babble than User experiences. I wanted one of these, but have decided to wait.

I now own a Mondi. I purchased it from Clear in Atlanta. The price was $449. Here's what I know about it so far. \r\n\r\nI don't have much bad to say about it (and I'm looking real hard as there is a 7 day return policy on this one). It doesn't connect with the Clear WiMax network well at all. It did connect in the store but we didn't get a good signal. We went outside about 2 blocks from a tower and still got a low connection that kept dropping. we spent a couple hours with their tech support and ended up with a "oh well" from the support group. However, it does pick up WiFi B/G quite well and it is very stable.\r\n\r\nWhile I haven't figured the whole thing out yet I can say with out a doubt this is the best PDA I've ever put my hands on. (I had an I700 many moons ago). It has everything you can dream up and it will do VOIP. For those of you cell phone people - cell phones are old news now. Why pay big cell bills when you can call for free and talk as long as you want? \r\n\r\nI'm knew to skype (VOIP app) and I'm still trying to figure it all out, but I have made a few calls with the Mondi and it works great. Tomorrow I plan on figuring out how to make a video conference call to the office as it does have a video camera on the flip side of the Camera as well. After that I'm going to work at the beach... (grin)\r\n\r\nHaving not come from much of a windows mobile background I am faced with a bit more learning curve than others but I can tell you that from the 24 hours of experience I've had with it, this thing absolutely ROCKS! It's got the iPhone beat hands down. I'm sure the iPhone will give this a run for it's money when they add the camera but still, this thing is light years ahead of anything else out there right now.\r\n\r\nI'll be throwing my cell phone (and the cell bills) in the trash next month, as soon as I get a Blue Tooth headset working with the VOIP so I can make voice calls without a wired headset. You can make calls without one but it's like being on a speaker phone with someone.\r\n\r\nMy Mondi supports 4G, I don't see that it supports 3G at first glance (sprint) and I don't see any reference to it in the manual. I can connect to any wifi hotspot anywhere and make a call with no limits to any land or cell phone, and it's only $30... (wait for it)... A YEAR.. (skype).\r\n\r\nThis really does raise the bar. I see cell towers becoming LTE and WiMax towers in the future with exception to those carriers with CDMA networks (like MetroPCS)\r\n\r\nOther than the WiMax connectivity issue, which I think is a limitation of the Mondi's antenna, and the bulk of the item, I would like to see more internal ROM memory (although it does have 32GB and a micro SD slot). None the less, I really like it. Considering it will do everything my laptop will and more (at 1/3 the price) and I can hold it in my hand, it's awesome and it won't break the bank. Way to go Samsung! I give it 5 Bars!\r\n\r\nNow... if I can just locate some accessories (HDMI TV cable, leather case, Blue tooth headset) and get a handle on all that it will do, I'll be a very happy clam.\r\n\r\nRob

Are you saying that the Mondi carries a SIM card? I do not live in the US and so will have to buy unlocked. Is this possible?

Right now the Samsung Mondi is scheduled for retail availability later this year. Once it’s available for sale, you will be able to buy the Mondi at Clearwire stores, Best Buy and independent dealers. The Mondi will be purchased with a contract with Clearwire for their "Clear" mobile WiMAX service. For questions regarding contract terms and service plans, please check with Clearwire.

I'm independent developer/programmer, write for WinCE and Winmo platforms for years. In many countries. I'm very exciting about this concept, and would like to test my solutions in such bigger screen in Winmo device, or maybe to find somehing new and original. I suppose it will become much more convenient in using GPS-enabled and geo-centric solutions. How can I get in touch with this beautiful device? In Europe.

Please for heavens sake. Let us know when this prize is going to be in our hands. Who is going to support it. What ISP. Clearwire, or Sprint. This is too long to wait for information for such a major player in the market. Give us something to hold on to. Even a timeline, and order of area release would be good. The sooner the better. Have plenty of them on hand!

I would love to be a beta tester in the new Atlanta market. I just signed up for the Clear servcie and it's great. Now I need a Mondi to really use the service as intended.

Can you release the dimensions and screen resolution. Some websites indicate that they may be incorrect on those two specifications.

Please approximate when this device will debut in the U.S... it looks to be the perfect "convergence device" for those current users of Winmo, who would like additional functionality.. web video, mobile web, dedicated voip(skype etc.)..\r\n\r\n Very much looking forward to this release..

The Samsung Mondi is not outfitted with traditional cellular radio service. It will, however, support VoIP service.

At this point, there are no plans to embed HSDPA for the U.S. version of the Samsung Mondi. Since the Mondi includes WiFi connectivity, you will be able to stay connected on the go, even in areas without Mobile WiMAX service.
