Instinct S30
March 31, 2009

Sprint and Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile) today announced the upcoming availability of Samsung Instinct® s30, a successor to the iconic Samsung Instinct touch screen phone that debuted last summer exclusively from Sprint.

The Instinct s30 is ideal for customers looking to simplify and increase the productivity of their business and personal lives with quick access to corporate calendar functionality via Microsoft® Outlook®. Sprint Mobile Email Work provides access to corporate email, contacts, and calendar from Microsoft® Exchange Server 2000, 2003 or 2007 accounts, or IBM Lotus Domino accounts at no additional charge.

Like its predecessor, Instinct s30 has the following industry-leading features:

[nggallery id=213]
  • Expansive touch screen featuring localized haptic feedback giving users a gentle vibration as they use the virtual QWERTY keypad

  • Live Search for Sprint, powered by Microsoft, provides easy access to directory information on-the-go, GPS-enabled directions, interactive maps and one-touch click to call access

  • Visual Voicemail, allowing users to listen to messages in their order of preference and manage them with a simple tap of the screen

  • Sprint TV® with an extensive selection of channels and on-demand programming

  • Sprint Music Store allowing users to browse and wirelessly download full-length songs directly to their phone for just 99 cents each

  • Advanced stereo Bluetooth® 2.0

  • SMS voice and text messaging with threaded text

  • True HTML Web experience from both the enhanced embedded browser and the addition of Opera Mini 4.2 with a desktop-like browsing experience

  • 2.0 megapixel camera with camcorderInstinct S30 will also be more “open” than its predecessor, with access to core Java APIs (application programming interface), including messaging, multimedia and Bluetooth, that allow developers to take advantage of the phone’s features. By providing this open access, Sprint is providing what developers have been seeking and making it possible for them to create more sophisticated and innovative new applications for customers to use on the Instinct family of phones.

Developers will have open access to the following Java APIs when creating applications on Instinct s30:

  • Multimedia: recording audio, playing media files such as MP3 songs, streaming content and using the camera to take pictures

  • Messaging: sending and receiving messages

  • Bluetooth - establishing connectivity to send/receive data with peripherals

  • Contacts/Calendar: reading and writing to contacts/address book, and reading and writing to events

  • File Access: reading and writing to the internal file access on the handset“We are excited to introduce Instinct s30 into our portfolio in a few weeks as we continue the tradition of innovative and easy-to-use touch screen devices that will appeal to a broad array of our customers,” said Kevin Packingham, Sprint senior vice president of product and technology development. “The original device surpassed our highest expectations for both customer interest and industry accolades. The enhancements on Instinct s30 make it even more versatile for our customers and access to core Java APIs like messaging and multimedia will make it even easier for more developers to create new applications.”

Sprint plans to extend access to these Java APIs to the Instinct s30’s predecessor, Instinct, through an over-the-air software upgrade. The Java APIs will then be available on all future Java-enabled Sprint phones.

In providing open access to these capabilities, Sprint is creating a leading open software environment for developers to create innovative applications. Sprint’s industry-leading Application Developer Program further supports development in an open environment by providing an extensive set of free resources, including a kit with Instinct programming templates and device emulation, sample applications with source code, developer guides and developer forums.

I have the new instinct but it does not get the great weather, news and movies info that the old instinct had. I contacted your tech support and after a good hour of air time was told "tough luck you can't get it on the new phone". Is it possible to downgrade back to the old phone?

What happened to the old news, weather, sports and movies apps that were on the original instinct? They aren't on my s30, I just get shipped off to some crappy web pages. I want my old offline cached apps back! I enjoyed being able to download my news and then have access to it on a plane when I'm off network.

There were no instant messengers available on the m800. On the s30, you can use AIM, MSN, and YIM. And if you exit without signing out, you will get a text for new messages. Unfortunately, it doesn't show the message, it's just an alert.\r\nAs to Opera and the games being available to download, that may be true, but on the s30, they are pre-loaded. Which is all the admin was saying. Hardly a "load of crap."

I just aquired the new Samsung S30 and I am in LOVE! I have always been a loyal Samsung customer and have never been disappointed with your products! I was going to get an iphone but I know of many people with the iphone and the majority of them have problems with the phone.\r\nThe new Samsung S30 is sleek in design and easy for anyone to use. I have big hands and am very impressed how the phone seems to know which icons I am touching with ease. It is so lightweight and just plain fun to use. I have so many people stopping me and asking me about my phone. Initially they think it is an iphone but I show them it's a Samsung S30 and they are amazed. Once again, Thank you Samsung for continuing to produce the fun and quality products that enhance my quality of life.

That's a load of crap. There is no more instant messaging in the s30 that there was in the m800. Somebody screwed up typing a one report somewhere, and so many people copy and paste, it will probably be 6 months before anybody corrects it. The only real differences are the hardware upgrades. It'll run faster and be more responsive. The opera mini was already free to download and guitar hero and 5th grader crap is just 2 games that you could already buy. Not worth upgrading if you already have one.

Will the upgraded software of the new S30 be available for the Old M800? I am looking at getting one of them, but I am split with the new S30 and its good software but slow Rev-0 vs the old M800 having Rev-A and not as good software. If I can download the upgraded software of the new S30 on an old M800 then it would be easier for me to decide. \r\nThanks
