Samsung and Yahoo! marry TV with Web
January 8, 2009

Some steps are so logical that you wonder how you lived without it for so long. Starting in 2009, Samsung will introduce select flat-panel HDTVs powered by the Yahoo! Widget Engine, a fifth-generation applications platform that is built in lightweight Javascript and XML.

The initiative, dubbed “Internet@TV – Content Service,” enables TV watchers to interact with and enjoy a rich set of TV Widgets. It can bring your favorite, personalized Internet content direct to your television. Tracking your stocks, reading headline news and browsing Internet video will just be just a few clicks away.

Current TV Widgets include popular Yahoo! properties like Flickr, as well as third-party content from sources like YouTube and Ebay. Additionally, the service is built on the open-platform Widget Development Kit (WDK), allowing developers to develop and deploy their own specialized widgets and making for a truly personal TV experience.

Internet@TV – Content Service will be available through built-in Ethernet ports on select displays or via an optional WiFi dongle.

What 52" or larger LCD Samsung TVs will be powered by the Yahoo Widget engine? We are deciding now between the LN52A850 and the LN55A950, but wanted to see what your new TV models will be like.\r\nCan you reply? Thank you.
